Arizona Diamondbacks are embracing third straight pennant race

With 12 games left in the regular season the 75-75 Arizona Diamondbacks sit two games outside of the final NL Wild Card spot.

When the season started this team expected be here, albeit with more wins and a “better” position.

However, that isn’t the reality after every high leverage pitcher got hurt and this team blew countless games.

In 2023 it took 84 wins to get in. 89 wasn’t enough last season. This year, it’s looking like 83, 84, or 85 wins could be enough.

Regardless of final win totals, those that have been here are leaning on their experience.

“It’s fun and exciting baseball,” Alek Thomas said. “Being able to play in games that mean a lot is really cool and really fun… for us to have a chance to make it there is really cool.”

James McCann is one of the many players who weren’t here for Opening Day, but he knows this team has always expected to be here in the hunt.

The circumstances are unique for a team that has won nine of its last 12 series since being sellers at the Trade Deadline.

The roster construction, mostly due to injuries and being sellers, isn’t ideal. The guys who are here are embracing all sorts of roles.

“We don’t have a true first baseman, it’s kind of crazy to think about that,” Torey Lovullo said. “These guys have no ego and are just all in on doing whatever it takes to get us where we want to go.”

The Diamondbacks open up a three game set against the Giants tonight. The winner of the series wins the season series, which is important for tiebreakers.

Following this series, the snakes have 3-game home series’ against the Phillies and Dodgers, before ending the season on the road against the Padres.

Pennant races are where the Arizona Diamondbacks belong. Point blank.
