Kenny Dillingham on Wide Receiver Room, Lessons from NAU

Arizona State football played well in their 38-19 win over NAU on Saturday.

The game outcome was never really in question, but for a team with College Football Playoff aspirations, there was plenty to clean up ahead of Mississippi State.

After some time to review, Kenny Dillingham felt good about the effort and his team. If some penalties were erased, there might be discussion of a  career night for Sam Leavitt. He also pointed to teams like Oregon and Notre Dame last year who had early season scares but used it to adapt.

Early Season Challenges

One of the things that Dillingham has brought up repeatedly since Saturday’s game was the fact that NAU showed slightly different sets and plays than the ASU coaching staff was prepared for.

He said that can be a common challenge for the early part of the season in college football.

Striking Balance in the Wide Receiver Room

Jordyn Tyson had a high output night that has become a norm for the talented wide receiver. However, the rest of the receiver room was quiet with just two receptions on the evening.

Digging a little deeper paints a slightly different story though. Sam Leavitt connected with Malik McClain for a 60+ yard gain, but the play was called back due to a penalty. Veteran wide receiver Jalen Moss played sparingly in the second half due to injury.

Dillingham said he wants to include the other receivers more, but if Jordyn Tyson is open it would be “foolish” not to target him.

ASU hits the road for the first time this year as they head to Mississippi State on Saturday.
