Friday Night Notebook: Early season reactions here to stay

203c689544

Week 2 of the Arizona high school football season has (mostly) come and gone. We are really starting to be able to react to different teams and story lines, even though it’s still early.

Spurge’s POV

Friday night I decided to hit up two different games.

My first stop was Hamilton with the Huskies hosting Sandra Day O’Connor. As soon as I stepped on the field one thing stood out to me: size. These teams have THE BEEF.

Hamilton ran away with the game 62-14, but the first 17+ minutes looked like an even match up. SDO’s two starting tackles, Jaden Maxey and Tucker Smith, are giants that can hold the line of scrimmage against anybody. Running back Jeremy Adeyanju has all the tools to be an elite rusher. The Eagles seriously should be a team to look at as a potential 6A champion.

What separates Hamilton from the rest of the top 6A programs, like SDO, is their depth at all three defensive levels and the elite youth of their skill positions on offense.

Last week we said Hamilton is the 3rd best team in the state. I stand by that after watching sophomore quarterback Jax Sculley go to work with my own eyes. He has great command of the offense and can make any throw.

The Huskies are only going to keep getting better as the season goes on too, which is saying a ton considering they’ve outscored two great opponents 125-34…

Stop two for me was Benjamin Franklin for a 3A showdown between the Chargers and Thatcher.

Ben Franklin won 27-12, showing they are a true contender in 3A with a 3-0 start to the season.

Coach Danny Norris is building this program the right way. The Chargers play physical at the line of scrimmage and aggressive on defense.

Running back Landon Stetka stands out as a rough runner who isn’t afraid to out physical anyone.

Out of state outcomes

The biggest game in the state today was an out of town bout hosted by Basha.

The Bears welcomed Orange Lutheran (CA), a top 25 team in the country.

And just as they seem to always do on this stage, they won 30-24.

What Chris McDonald has done to make Basha a program that can beat anyone in the west coast is nothing short of remarkable.

Meanwhile, a team that lost to Basha last week went to Colordao.

Brophy Prep beat Regis Jesuit 44-18.

Chandler lost a tight game to Cathedral Catholic in San Diego, 24-23.

Highland traveled to Texas, only to have a storm force them to move the game to Saturday.

Hello, Contenders

I’m getting a little bit of Deja vu, but Red Mountain is quickly showing they are here to win a championship this year.

The Mountain Lions beat ALA Queen Creek 31-28, blocking a field goal to lock down the win.

Kyle Enders is one of the top coaches in the state. This staff does an incredible job maximizing the talent in this program. Last year injuries slowed them down. A healthy Red Mountain team this year could do a ton of damage and end the year with a ring…

Arizona College Prep played in the 4A title game last year and lost to Mica Mountain. Now they are in 5A and new head coach Derek Zellner has things rolling. ACP beat Desert Mountain 19-15.

No matter the level, the Knights keep showing up and winning.

Other scores

Mountain Pointe 55 – Desert Vista 35 (Tukee Bowl)

ALA Gilbert North 35 – Cactus Shadows 33

Sunnyslope 29 – Notre Dame Prep 28

Saguar0 23 – Chaparral 10

Tempe 38 – Carl Hayden 0

Mesa Mountain View 46 – Mesa 7

Deer Valley 38 – Goldwater 34
