Many young members on a college staff are getting their first crack at coaching.
Not Cannen Siegel.
The former Saguaro Sabercat started as a volunteer coach on the Scottsdale Argos youth team when he was a freshman in high school. After he experienced an injury that ended his playing career, his varsity coach Jason Mohns recruited him to be a player assistant. Siegel embraced the role and helped the Sabercats win their only Open Division title.
He went to Idaho State under Charlie Ragle in what Mohns called a “player-coach” role while Siegel rehabbed his knee. He made such an impression that when Ragle joined Arizona State’s staff, he wanted Siegel to make the move as well.
Now, he works closely with defensive coordinator Brian Ward and the Sun Devil safeties.
His story sounds similar to how head coach Kenny Dillingham got his start at Chaparral High School. Mohns joked that he’s nice to Siegel in case he works for him down the road. But Siegel is embracing where he’s at right now and learning as much as he can as the Sun Devils look to repeat as Big 12 Champions.
